Jamaica Journey Part 3 - Feeling the Spirit

I felt so 'blessed' to be in a place that felt like heaven.

I felt at peace, well grounded and thankful for all my provisions.

To complete my Jamaica journey story I wanted to focus on the 'spirit'. It's taken me almost a year to complete this, as I needed to gather my thoughts and express them at the right time. During my trip to Jamaica earlier in 2019, I had the opportunity to return back to the place I was born or where I like to call my 'roots. I spent my days outside on the white sandy beach and listened to the warm ocean waves. I felt so 'blessed' to be in a place that felt like heaven. I felt at peace, well grounded and thankful for all my provisions.

A very special Sunday service in Negril with my new little friend

I will never forget this special Sunday morning when I spent some time in a little church in Negril. The church was located off of the main road, the ocean being only a few hundred feet away. I could hear the ocean waves gently cascading to the shore in the faint distance as I sat in the wooden pews. The windows were open from both sides as I gazed at red and pink coloured hibiscus flowers on the left, while the breeze carried it's sweet fragrance into the church.

Many people did not attend church because the annual donkey races were being held that Sunday afternoon. I skipped the donkey races, rather opted for a more fulfilling day.  I had the honour of sitting beside a little girl named Keyshia. As I whispered to my new found friend during church service, I quickly found out from her that she was super excited to be there. Her parents did not attend church, however, where there was a will, there was a way.  She always managed to find a ride to church and that day, she came with her neighbours.  The night before, she had her dress immaculately ironed and planned out her entire outfit. She wanted to be ready in her Sunday best and made sure her hair was combed and braided perfectly. This little girl brought planning and intentions to another level!

There were only about a dozen people in church that day and almost everyone went to the podium to share a story or give a word of encouragement. In the middle of service, a young man staggered in with a black eye, scars all over his face and his arm in a sling bandage. He looked out of place as he reluctantly entered the church. At that moment, my little friend Keyshia exclaimed, ‘that’s my uncle’.  He came to visit his niece in church and came with a purpose. You see, he was in trouble with the law and on the run. He needed some spiritual healing and a place of refuge. The pastor and congregation opened their hearts and words of wisdom to this young gangster. This little church in Negril was jumping with music, soul, forgiveness and celebration. The whole experience was emotionally fulfilling and totally unforgettable. The little girl, Keyshia reminded me to look at the world through a child's eye and not to judge a book by its cover. Also, it’s never too late to feel the spirit. As we move forward into a new decade, it’s a good reminder to always prepare and be grateful for your blessings.
